Repeated Infractions with Little Consequences
A high school student has been sent to the office and in-school detention (ISD) multiple times for making sexual noises, hand-gestures, and comments during class. This has been addressed with the student's mother, administrators, the counselor, and the school social worker. The other day, this same student was caught exposing the complete right side of his rear-end to two female students at the beginning of class as everyone was filing in. He had his pants and underwear pulled down completely on the right side. The teacher immediately sent the student to the office for indecent exposure, and the student walked away with only 2 days of in-school suspension. The teacher does not feel that the infractions are receiving the appropriate consequences, and the student's behavior continues to worsen. What should the teacher do?

The important thing for the teacher to is to follow school and district procedures for this type of situation. The teachers needs to document every incident, conversation, conference, etc. should something more serious occur and proof can be given for a history of inappropriate behavior by the male student. The teacher needs to keep in close contact with administration to help resolve the issue.

I agree with you every thing needs to be documented and the administration needs to be involved.

I would talk to the administrator that is making the decisions about the consequences for this student. Maybe there is something you don't know that may influence the situation. I would tell the administrator that you are feeling unsupported by their response and would like to know their thinking behind their decision. I would also express my concern about what may happen to the school if this behavior goes unchecked. It seems to me this could be grounds for a lawsuit if the parents of the other students do not feel like the problem is being addressed. If you do not get a satisfactory response I would speak to the principal or assistant superintendent if the principal has already been notified. If the teacher is also being exposed to this, I would think it would be grounds for filing sexual harassment charges by the teacher.

This is a huge issue and the student should not being doing that to other students. If the administration is not helping and the girls parents talk to you then you should have the parents address to administration that this is not acceptable and something needs to happen.

The student should face very serious consequences for this, possibly even legal ramifications from the juvenile justice system. I would explain to the administration that getting off easy may lead the student to even more inappropriate behavior. The teacher can also anonymously call the Central Abuse Hotline because this type of behavior can be reported there on behalf of the 2 girls he exposed themselves to.

This behavior is not unacceptable and will escalate if ignored. The teacher needs to supervise this student at all times and document all inappropriate behavior. Although it has been addressed by the administrator, parent and counselor-it needs to be addressed again. This is not normal behavior and he may be experiencing something in the home that is triggering the behavior. Speak to the administrator and counselor privately and express your concerns. His behavior is affecting other students and cannot be ignored.

Keep a level head. Do not yell or show that you are overly stressed. Getting angry will give the student more power. You may have to give the students assigned seating. Make sure that you keep documenting the behaviors. Having a line of communication with family, admin and staff will help keep people in the loop. Since this student is in high school I am guessing that he has multiple teachers. I would communicate with the students other teachers. Is the student doing this in all classes or just with certain teachers? I might have a meeting student and others in this situation.

That is awful. It sounds like this student needs to go before a tribunal and get a punishment. That is sexual harassment, and the school could get into a lot of trouble if they allow this behavior to continue. I wonder if your superintendent knows this type of behavior is going on at the high school. I do know think they would think this was acceptable. I am sure the parents of the other students do not as well. I know this is not the best thing to do, but maybe you should tell some of the students to complain about this student. The more complains, maybe your administration would be forced to take this situation seriously.

I would not involve other students any more than I had to.
