What can schools do to be more welcoming places for sexual and gender diversity?
To make school more welcoming places for sexual and gender diversity schools can incorporate lessons that education people about their lifestyles into the curriculum. This is required by the state of California. Another way to welcome the LGBTQ community is to be more welcoming of the students and their families in all school activities. Preventing LGBTQ students from being degraded would also make these students be more welcoming in schools. Assumptions about LGBTQ students that need to challenge so that diversity can be recognized include the following; the assumption that everyone is heterosexual, meaning there are things in the world and in curriculum that may offend LGBTQ students. School personnel's also believe that sexuality is an age appropriate choice. This this not true, ignoring this issues at a young age can be harmful to students. They need to be exposed to this at an early age so that they will appreciate other who life alternative lifestyles. This can also prevent bullying, harassment, and hate crimes against LGBTQ students.
