Drug Testing
In the state of Georgia, teachers are not obligated to do drug testing prior to entering the career. Also, they do not have random drug testing throughout their years of teaching. Do you guys think this is safe for the students?

I think that some form of drug testing is a good idea, whether it happens initially or it is random. It holds teachers accountable, which is important.

I don't think it is important for teachers to be drug tested frequently unless school personnel suspect there could be drug use.

I agree, there should be some form of drug testing for teachers.

There may not be random drug testing for teachers in the state of Georgia, but if administration has a concern they are allowed to request that the teacher submit to a drug test. I know this has happened before in my county.

Yes, if there is cause for concern, it will be handled by the school administration.

The thought process is on the right track, but this does not clearly state a solution.

I have taught in 3 different states, and none of them required drug testing prior to getting hired. I was shocked by this. I believe teachers should have to pass a drug test prior to signing a contract. I also think it's appropriate to require random testing. I just feel you can never be too safe when it comes to children.

Although there may be the odd teacher out there who engages in this type of reckless behavior, for the most part I believe teachers have worked hard for that teaching degree and don't live the life style that doing drugs is part of. I think drug testing would only put another burden on already heavily burdened financial situations for districts.

I agree that this is probably a rare occurrence and unlikely to impact students. However, I believe that the contract for my school district does say they can drug test us if they feel there is a need. We also have drug dogs that come to our school regularly (and this is not a school with a big drug problem, it's just something our district does) so if a teacher had something on them or in their car it would be found.

I agree. This is the best solution. Unless something is suspected, I do not think they need to be tested.

In our County drug testing takes place if there is a noticeable reason. If the teacher is not productive or is acting out of character a drug test may be requested. I agree with a drug test at the start of each school year and then at random if there is an obvious issue.

Many times teachers are drug tested when they are first hired and not tested ever again. I think that as long as teachers are not showing signs of using or being inappropriate it should be okay.

There should be a drug test during the hiring process. There should only be random drug tests if there is documented suspicion.

Nowadays most jobs require a drug test. I was impressed when the school hired me and they did not request a drug test. I found it really odd because in my others jobs (no school jobs) most of the time the employer will require it. I think it is important to request a drug test. School personnel works with kids and they have to be responsible for them.

I find this policy very odd. But i have mixed feeling about it as well. I feel what you do on your free time if your deal but at the same time i do feel that the teachers should be drug tested before and randomly.

Personally, I think that it is a waste of money to pay for random drug testing throughout the year for teachers. If it is suspected because something occurred in the classroom or the teacher is suddenly having odd behavior, I would say yes otherwise no.

I believe they should be drug tested at random before getting the job, say they are hired for the beginning of the school year in 2021, sometime random in the summer they should be tested. I dont think they should be tested further than that unless suspected drug use.

I do not think drug testing should be mandatory. The teachers should know what they can and cannot do and if there seems to be an issue the principal should be on top of it and take the steps necessary.

I believe that drug testing is circumstantial. With all of the new legalizations of CBD and medical Marijuana, it would most likely have to vary state by state. Personally, I don't mind a drug test.
