I feel as though real-world experiences are essential to make connections while learning. My principal says because we are Title I we can not ask for much money from the parents. Obviously this does not work for every situation, like a farm. Often companies or people are more than willing to make a visit to your classroom/ school. It does not hurt to ask, and this will still give your students the experience, without the extra costs that come with a field trip. It allows students to see things and places far and wide without leaving the classroom. There are even some where you can interact with people and students can ask question and get real time responses. The internet allows you to have the world at you fingertips. This will allow students to experience the world through technology and research. I think the possibilities are endless and I plan to use virtual field trips in my own classroom. There is a plethora of places you could take the students on a field trip around the school. You could involve science and look for certain eco systems, clouds types, and weather patterns on the playground. Social studies adventures could take the students to places and people you are learning about in the classroom. Pinterest is great for projects and ideas for stuff like this! For example if you are learning about animals turn your classroom into an imaginary zoo, or studying the planets turn your classroom into outer space! This requires a lot of crafting time on your part but it is a great way to overcome the lack of fieldtrips. They sponsor a couple trips a year for our students. They pay for the bus, and the students' admission. Some of the trips are not the most extravagant, but it at least gives the students a chance to experience something other than the school itself. So, I would try finding school sponsors that are interested in helping the local students. You could also go on virtual field trips or have students think of local places that are easy to get to that cost little to nothing. It also helps to go to places that are within walking distance so that buses do not need to be rented. If there is something specific you want to do with your students try finding a grant you can apply for and use that towards a trip. This may be hard to achieve but it doesn't hurt to try. Also ask local places if they do any type of tour for free and see if you can walk there with your students or get inexpensive transportation. Many local places will either come to you or you can go there for a free educational tour. There are also grants that can be given for things like this. This allows the students to learn about different jobs around your community. The students are actually able to ask questions about the jobs, as well as learn. Depending on the schedule, some students in middle schools may have 2 or 3 different people they meet, while elementary students may have a few more. Sometimes the amount of time for each person is short, however the students still get to see a variety of things. They could see a service dog with their trainer, someone in the military, or even a woodworker. The people who come usually bring different objects that they may use or even examples of work they've done before. The best part is, the students are more than likely the ones moving around, so they can burn some energy as they walk to the different locations. Depending upon the fundraiser, you should be able to raise enough for the trips. I would be certain to choose items that will sell well such as donuts and food. I would also seek a partnership or sponsorship with local businesses who will sponsor a class in exchange for recognition.
