Help Me Stick Out!
I am a fairly new, novice teacher looking for a new school. What are some ways I can stand out beyond other candidates? I have launched a website and created a teacher brochure. Any other ideas?

If you can I recommend becoming a sub in the counties you are most interested in. This gets your name out there and builds up your references. I also think when a job is posted it is best to take you resume to the school personally and not just fill-out the online application. Showing a smiling face to the office staff and hopefully even administration can make a great impact.

I would definitely say to visit schools that you are interested in. I would set a meeting with the principals even if there are no open positions at that time. Sometimes for various reasons positions may open in the middle of the school year. If a principal already had a face to a name on the resume, it will definitely benefit you!

A good way to stick out is to have multiple subjects you are interested in teaching. Showing a diversity in subjects you can cover will make you an asset to any school.

-Look up some interesting lessons, ones that get other teachers talking.
-Step out of your comfort zone.
-If you can get assignments from your students school-wide (grade-wide) for being "fun" teachers will begin to recognize your enthusiasm.

When I interviewed in a new place with only a few years of experience, I made sure to email the principal directly letting him/her know how interested I was in the position. I also attached my resume and cover letter to the email. This lets them know how serious you are about pursuing a job in their school. Once you land an interview, I suggest coming prepared with 3 good questions for you to ask them. My principal always said how impressed she was that I took the initiative to ask them tough questions. For instance, I asked them one thing they felt they could improve upon for the next year.

Knowing about the school and the students that attend that particular school before hand is helpful. Being knowledgable and prepared for questions shows that you truly want the position and that you have thought it through.

I am a new teacher as well and want to stand out during the interviewing process. I like the fact that you created a website advocating for yourself. I would say this keeps folders or files of all your teaching pictures and lessons you created. I have so many folders of different projects I have worked on since my degree, and I also have an online platform portfolio that showcases amazing work and lesson plans that I have done over the degree coursework. This is just one solution!

If you are interested in a particular school or district, start by substituting at these locations. This will help familiarize you with them; and them to you.
