What are the limits when it comes to social media and education? I remember hearing a story of a principal who was fired because she posted a picture of her and her friends drinking wine. Is this over stepping the boundaries, or is the new norm for education? |

Unfortunately it seems this is the way education is going. At my high school the baseball coach was fired for having one beer at a bowling ally after a game when baseball players were present. In my opinion its getting pretty ridiculous. All I can say is be very careful what you post on social media because there are no clear boundaries on what you can and can't post and if you post the wrong thing it can cost you your job. |

Unfortunately as educators we have a tougher code of ethics to abide by. I still have a Facebook, instagram, and twitter...however I only post things that I wouldn't mind my parents, coworkers, and administrators seeing. I also required all posts I'm "tagged" in to be approved by me before it is allowed on my Facebook timeline. |

I like this strategy, because it lets you see what people tag you in. If it will compromise your chance of getting a job, I would ask people to remove the post or not tag me in the first place. |

Social media in education can have several pro and con. However, I do believe that there are boundaries that teachers need to follow as they are held at a higher expectation. Therefore, teachers must think carefully on what they're putting on the internet. |

It is important to remember as an educator that you are a role model to students. For this reason, it is important to not set a bad example for students. It is important that a teacher keeps their private life private from students and not expose them to anything they do that is not appropriate for the students to see. |

Personally I think that what happens outside of school, as long as it is not against the law, should be the business of that person, however, I know that teachers are held to a higher standard. Does this mean someone should be fired for a picture of them drinking wine, no! The best advice I could give and personally follow, is to not post "compromising" pictures, make your profile private and use a pseudo name and generic profile picture. |

This is an unfortunate fact about education. As teachers we are seen as role models for our students, but are not treated as professionals. We are forced to limit our outings to those that are deemed as appropriate and professional during our free time and are not allowed to post on social media as others do, in case the parents of our students see what occurs during our own lives. I believe that this practice is definitely overstepping boundaries and should be addressed and stopped. |

When you choose to be a teacher, you are also choosing to be looked at with higher standards. Everything to do, say, wear, etc. is being watched by everyone. It seems silly because it's like people assume that you don't have a life outside of school, but that's truly how you have to act. If you would be embarrassed for your students or boss to see, then don't post it. |

I think this is a normal thing for most jobs and social media, there are some things that you should keep to yourself and you can your friends drinking is one of them. Once you are an educator or principal of students, you are in charge of other peoples children, it is not appropriate for them to see you posting on social media drunk/drinking as many jobs. It is most likely in the handbook so I am sure it was not out of line that they be fired. |

I feel like if you are a teacher or an administrator at a school, you should not be posting things that the school board or the parents of the children that attend the school should not be seeing. I feel like the firing of the principal was a little over the top, but again I could see where they were coming from. |
