Also, pre-tests are very important. This allows the teacher to guide the instruction for individual students and it also lets the teacher know in advance what the students know. Also, assessments FOR learning are important. Having the students involved in the learning process and being responsible for their own learning and growth is something that has been effective. Distributed practice meaning practicing the content in a number of short sessions over a long period of time. Some techniques I would avoid saying would be summarization, highlighting, the keyword mnemonic, imagery use for text learning, and rereading. Although those techniques could be used for certain grade levels, comparatively to techniques such as self-explanation, they are considered to be poor techniques. I would respond by saying practice testing and distributed practice are some methods that I have found effective. For instance, a game of jeopardy using clickers may be an interesting and effective way to asses students learning. I would back this up with the statement that if the children are having fun while learning they will retain more.
