How would you incorporate technology in your classroom?
If you are asked this question in a job interview for a teaching position: What are some things you should avoid when responding to this question? What might be some important points to stress that would get the interviewer's attention? How would you respond to this question?

Not at schools have the funding to afford a lot of technology. I would start by saying that I will take an inventory of the school's resources and incorporate as much technology as a possibly could. Depending on the grade that I end up teaching, I know several computer programs that are great for reading fluency and math skills. I believe that every school at least has computers available for the students. In an ideal situation, I would love to have the use of a SMARTBoard. The students are highly motivated by the interactive abilities of this tool, and they love to participate in activities that involve the SMARTBoard. Technology is a tool, not the means of conveying information. Technology should not be the only way that you teach students to read, and you should always have a backup plan in case the technology tools fail.

The use of technology is very important for this generation of students. I personally use technology with my students every day. My lessons include PowerPoints, videos (such as Brainpop), news articles online, and general planning from research based practices. My students use technology when researching, practicing math skills, creating PowerPoints, reading online through Myon, being assessed online, and much more. I think the biggest thing to incorporate is how those resources actually help the students accomplish the projected outcome. If I just play a Brainpop video and don't discuss it or use it for the lesson, there was no connection between the students and the resource. We have to remember that technology helps guide instruction, but does not replace instruction.

It would be important to stress the importance of teaching students digital citizenship and how to constructively implement technology into their education. As a middle school educator, it is critical that students understand how to use technology as a tool and not a toy. Students need to be provided with clear examples of proper search methods and sample websites with useful information. From an instructional standpoint, technology can be integrated to promote interactive, fast-paced lessons that require student engagement. Internet tools such as Kahoot.it allow me to review information with students through an interactive game. The question is posted via projector with answers that correlate to a color and shape. The students are able to respond on their electronic devices by selecting the corresponding color/shape that matches the answer on the projector.

Not all schools have funding for technology in the classroom. You should turn this question into how you would apply technology in your classroom. Technology is not just a computer or smartboard but is any form of solving a problem with a new technique. You are able to use that form of technology in almost every lesson for your students to have great growth through out the year even if technology is not obtainable in the classroom.
