The names are not necessarily bad but a lot of the students don't like them and it makes them upset, what is the best way to handle this?                 Submit a Possible Solution Please read response(s) below (if any) before posting your solution.                 Solution 1 Posted October 10, 2016 2:52 am LeWuVy Reps: 125 Try talking to the student about showing respect for their classmates. Explain that one way to show respect is to call them by their real name, and only use a nickname if it is something that they have asked to be called. Let them know that if the roles were switched that student wouldnt like it either. I would let them know that I would like it to stop or further consequences may arise from it. Explain annoying nicknames to him, and hope that he will change his ways. After the discussion, when he tries to nickname someone, give him the stink eye. I would explain the concept of perception to the students and have open discussion. Have the student explain individually why they do not like this name, and that it upsets them. Once they have all gone around the room, explain to the student that it is not nice and that this behavior really needs to stop. Have him apologize and have a fresh welcoming start. Tell the student that if it does not stop they will have to go to the office, get a referral, detention, etc for the behavior and that they will have to call his parents. You never want you students feeling embarrassed by someone else inside the classroom, causes more problems in the future. This student should be warm that he or she should not be calling anyone names, or making up nicknames. If the issues continue, this needs to be handle in a more direct manner. More discipline actions need to take place. I would read a book that you think best fits your classroom, you can then have the students come up with alternatives to use instead of name calling. Don’t assume just because the bully says you are stupid that anyone believes that. If you know that is simply not true, everyone else probably does to. Often times a bully is going to pick on the most obvious thing about you that he or she thinks will bother you.
