Just trying to Help
A student in class has a odor condition, and I tried to help the child from being picked on by others in the class so I sent home a little deodorant with the child. I received a note back from the parents with a very rude remark, \"(Blank student) has a mother and does not need another.\" Now, uncomfortably, I do not know what to do.

I worked in a classroom where we had deodorant for each student that was kept in the classroom. This way after PE the students had it available to freshen up. Perhaps implementing this in your room would help to not only provide deodorant for this student, but also not single him or her out, or their parents for that matter.

I would have a quick lesson on hygiene in the class and have hygiene products in my class for students to take home if they need to. This would be open to all students not just directed to one. Then document each day that child comes to school with a bad odor and if this is a consistent thing I will then reach out to the parents and let them know of this issue that is reoccurring at school if I dont smell a difference after that I will have a talk to the student about any personal issues at home and last resort would to talk to my supervisor.

I understand you were just trying to help but it is easy to see how the parent could have taken that the wrong way. Allowing the child to keep the deodorant at school will avoid that problem.

For this case, I would provide deodorant for each student for when they come back from P.E. This would help not singling the student out.

If I were in your shoes I would have a class set of spray deodorant and body sprays so no student feels singled out. Also, just let the parent know that you are looking out for their best interest and didn't mean it in a bad way.

This is a hard situation. I would try to calmly express my concerns for the child to their parents. Bringing it up in a calm and caring matter that shows your concern for their child can eliminate the behavior that the parent is expressing.

You can conduct a meeting or phone call to the parent explaining what is happening in school, and explain to them that you were not trying to overstep, but instead help the child. If the student doesn't take offense to you giving them deodorant, maybe just keep it at school instead of sending it home.

This is a tough situation because at this point the parent was clearly insulted. Maybe you could speak to the parent on a phone call or during a conference and explain that you are simply looking out for the student's best interest and that it breaks your heart to see him get picked on by others. Maybe then she will understand the situation and help her child.

Teach a lesson on hygiene and maybe that will have some students interested and relay the information to parents to teach hygiene also. Then if the problem still persists, then I would seek help from a counselor or social worker.
