Making fun of other students is not nice
There is a student who always comes to class late and stays past the schools time. I always see other students making fun of this students clothes that they wear. This student is always trying to fit in with the other students by making pranks in class and interrupting the teacher when they speak. I have tried to talk to this student but nothing seems to be working. Does anyone have any solutions for me? I can tell that it hurts this students feelings when they get made fun of. I feel like I have run out of options. |

I believe that you would need to have a personal conversation with the student about their home situation. Why does the student arrive late? Why does the student stay past school time? Can the student be reaching out for help in the wrong way? Try to get to know the student on a personal level and try to connect with them. |

I think this is a great solution to really understand what the student is going through. This can help the student and begin the next step to fix the problem. |

How well do you know this student? Do you know of hobbies or activities they like? Perhaps you can help the student find an avenue in which (s)he express his or herself. Maybe there is a club or team (s)he can join. If (s)he likes to create art, is there a club for it? Maybe (s)he lacks the confidence to connect with people and get to know them - having common ground is an easy ice breaker. If (s)he finds a good group of people who (s)he can call friends, maybe (s)he will no longer feel the need to attract attention to his or herself. |

I would fix this problem by having a talk with the class as a whole and telling them bullying will not be tolerated in this class by any means and if they plan on doing so I will have the taken out and sent to the office with a referral. I think this will calm it down a bit, then I would take the student aside who is getting bullied and have a one on one with them and ask them what is wrong and get to the real problem. If there is anything I can do to help and maybe have him meet with the guidance councilor one a week so they can talk about everything. |

I agree with talking to the class about how bullying is not acceptable, but I think puling the student out individually is not necessary and would just make the situation worse. |

The teacher needs to promote an environment of respect and tolerance in the classroom. She could do this by having students do a self-evaluation activity where they talk about their strengths and weaknesses. It is important that students understand that it is wrong to make fun of others, as humans we all have our flaws. |

I would address this by having a discussion in class about what is not tolerated when it comes to bullying. Then I would have a conference with the student to find the root problem of being late or staying late after school. Depending on how much the student shares, it may be necessary to direct him to a counselor or administrator to have a discussion with their parents. |

I would have a talk with this student and let them know that their behavior is not acceptable and they are not going to make friends just by acting out in class. They should utilize their wit and try to make friends in a more productive way. Also, I would have a conversation with the class as a whole and let them know about bullying and how that behavior will not be tolerated in your classroom. Go over possible punishments if the behaviors continue. |

I think this student needs to have a conversation in private one on one. You can learn about the student's home life and see why they are arriving late and staying late. I would also address the students who are making fun of this child. However, for this child in-particular I would explain that the pranks they are playing are going to get them in trouble and that is not the way to make friends. I would become a positive reinforcement for the student and a safe place for them. |

obviously the student is trying to fit in. I will use pairs or small groups in class often during activity time to open a door for friendship with his/her classmates. I will call for a conference with the guardian or parent and ask why the student is late all the time, but no matter what time student gets there, he/she should be welcome. |

I think having a private conversation with the student might work. Get some inside knowledge about their home life and see how you can help. Let the student know that you are there for them and that you can help if they need it. |

I would address both parties, individually. I would first talk to the student privately to learn more about the student's home life and how I can assist him and his family with basic needs (clothes, food, etc.) I would then have a class discussion about bullying and the effects it has on other students. No bullying should be a classroom rule, so I would start implementing whatever consequences you have in place for broken rules. |

Having a personal conversation can help. Lay down the law that this cannot continue. Also getting administration involved if things progress can be helpful. |

I would have a discussion with the student about their home life and also offer this student to talk to you in the future, checking in with him periodically. I would also have the guidance counselor do a social emotional lesson for the whole class specifically addressing teasing and how it makes others feel. |

You could maybe pull other students who you think they could get along with and change seating, make partners or have them complete an activity together. |

Punish the students who are teasing the student with a more difficult home life. Take more drastic measures with administration as this really needs to stop happening. Also send emails home to the families explaining the bullying. |
