They are both girls who pick on the girls with less friends. I would talk to all the students who are involved in this case and let them express how they feel and have them apologize. To deal with this behavior, my co-teacher and I taught a social/emotional lesson about bullying and how to treat others. We had the students make a pledge and write three ways in which they would change their behavior on flashcards. We made a poster out of their flashcards and hung it in the classroom to remind them of their pledge. If this continues after the lesson, I definitely think the parents should be informed and the students should be conferenced with. Ask the parents if this is an issue for them with their daughters friendships outside of school. Ask if they would be willing to work with you on addressing this issue. It is important as their teacher to let them know this is causing other people to feel down and is considered bullying. I would keep a watchful eye out to see if this continues and get feedback from the students feeling put down. It is important that they know you will not tolerate bullying in the classroom. Make sure to check on the students being bullied, ask if the girls need to speak with a counselor. Some students may not realize what they are doing is bullying. One girl telling another girl she doesn't like her shoes may not seem like a big deal to the first, but a huge deal to the girl who is being picked on. Do a lesson on bullying as well. It is something, even if covered in the beginning of the year, all the students need to be reminded about. A more simple solution would be to separate them in class, but this won't stop what happens in the hallways. I would pull these two girls aside and conference with them together and one-on-one if the behavior continues. The whole class needs to be addressed, but these two students need to have an individualized correction. I would also call the parents and explain to them what is happening. Monitor their behavior and continually correct their bad behavior. I have seen teachers do this when I was younger and it worked. When I was in school there were two friends whowere girls as well and they were so bad that the principle requested the teacher to separate them. It worked, but if that is something you are not comfortable with, then have a conference with their parents and tell them that this behavior is not tolerated and that privileges will be taken away. While doing this I would periodically take time to check to see how they are getting along. This activity would allow them to get to know each other better. Maybe they will discover that they have some things in common. If this did not work then I would then use the opportunity to counsel the girls about their behavior and speak to them about the consequences of their behavior. I would think of assigning an assignment about bullying and have an open discussion with the class about it. If the behavior continues, let them know that their parents will be contacted because what they're doing is bullying. Make them aware that what they're doing causes others to feel sad and that's not okay. How would they feel if they were treated this way? I would explain to them the consequences for their actions and if they continue the behavior I would involve their parents then the admin team. Bullying should not be tolerated at all in the class. When you hear or see these girls being mean to other girls, immediately step in and stop them. Don't let little sly remarks go. Nip it in the bud, right away. Discuss with both of them together, and even separately that their behavior will not be tolerated. If one of them is the leader of the two, work with her and use her as an example so the other will also stop.
