Just not hard enough
The parent contacts you stating that following. Parent : I don't think you are making the class work hard enough. My child hardly ever has homework and I think you are dumbing down the curriculum because there are some trouble-makers and ‘Special Education' students in the class. How would you approach this situation? |

I would pay attention to the student during class time. If I notice that the student is on a higher intellectual level and the parents agree to it, I would recommend the student be evaluated for gifted classes or higher level work. I would also challenge the student to do things such as research outside of the assigned homework and read novels at home if the homework is not enough to challenge them. |

I would agree with this soultion. The student may be giftd and need to be placed in a more challenging enviroment. |

I would monitor their child for a few days, the best that I could and pay extra attention to the quality of work. At that point I would discuss it with a counselor or another teacher for second opinion and make a decision from there. |

I would explain that just because her students is doing well in the class and is not doing a lot of work at home it is more a testament to her students brightness than an insult to him or the rest of the class. I would from then on attempt to monitor the students work and ask him if there is more that he would like to do. |

Suggest that the child gets put into another class if the grades show what the parents are saying. In a co taught class, things have to go at a slower pace, but we must also have extension activities for those students who are known for finishing early. Also, give the parent some at home resources that the child can go on each night to review concepts taught in class. Maybe that particular child can go a level up on the homework each night. |

I would offer the student not more homework, but homework that involves more thinking and high order questions. |
