Are they to covered at all times? What if a teacher has one on their ankle, wrist, behind ear? They all said it all depends on the principal. Some principals are tough on tattoos and others do not mind as long as there are no inappropriate tattoos visible. You should cover-up as best as you can for an interview and when you are there, I would ask their policy on tattoos. I have a tattoo and it is on my foot. I can easily hide it if necessary, but no one has ever said anything to me about it. However, anytime I go for an interview for anything, I make sure it's covered. I know at other schools teachers can show their tattoos without fear while others have to have them covered. It truly depends on the school and the hiring committee. In most cases, it's expected to have tattoos hidden when on the job. I have met quite a few teachers who don't have to hide their tattoos, as long as they are not inappropriate. Some of the appropriate tattoos teachers have had are flowers, quotes, breast cancer ribbons, animals, etc. Something they'd want hidden is nudity, cursing, violence, horror, etc. To be safe, I would hide any visible tattoos if you are unaware of the policies your school, or expected school, has. Hid them for interview purposes but after that tattoos are fine as long as they are appropriate. example of something inappropriate would be a Naked lady. Flowers, quote, butterfly, etc you're fine. Though when you go to an interview it's always good to cover it up so you look even more professional. Times are changing now so it's much more acceptable depending on the school. Now a days, most schools are perfectly fine with tattoos as long as they are appropriate. This means no gang affiliations, no nudity, no foul language or anything you would not want children to see. Typically, private or religious schools prohibit tattos but it is best to simple as the principle. Some schools can be really strict, some can be lenient. I have seen teachers with visible tattoos. Just make sure the ones that can be seen are tasteful. I talked with my cooperating teacher about this and she has absoutly no issues with them. I have seem quite a few teachers on the campus with them where they are clearly visable. I have also talked with the current principal about this and was even offered a job after graduating (im a second level intern). While he has absoutly no issues with the tattoos we did discuss how that is totally up to the principal at the school on the tattoo tollerance. I believe that it is best look up the school's policies and teacher's handbook on this issue. For your interview I would still cover up and ask them what their policy is on tattoos. Having said that their are tattoos that you can't cover them. It comes down to two things one your principal and if the tattoos are not negative ones. The Principal may be okay with tattoos if they are easily covered. I guess it is depend with the school and the tattoo's size and where it is located. Personally, I have a small tattoo on my wrist that says "Ana" in memory of my late grandmother. No administrator, teacher, or parent has noticed (or noted) it in conversation with me. This is not to say any tattoo will be okay or fly under the radar. For instance white supremacy, and overly sexual tattoos would be considered reasons for not getting the job. Now when I completed my internship for school they were very strict about tattoos and they had to be covered at all times. I would cover during the interview and be sure to ask about it when meeting with the principal. At her school, the principal is more concerned with your credentials and experience than with your body art. She did however say that most of the teacher's at her school that have tattoos do usually have them covered for the vast majority of the day but it is the teacher's choice; it is not forced by the school. Districts that are not so high class may have teachers that have visible tattoos, and that's fine because the students come from communities where they see a lot of the same things. In this era it is important that students can relate to their teachers. So, it just depends on the region. Make sure to check with your district and schools you're interested in before applying. What may be acceptable in one school will not be in another school. I would just double check during the interview or ask someone who would know at the job. I think in elementary school settings they are a little more strict about what can be shown. If the teacher has a tattoo in a difficult place to hide, they may be asked to wear make-up over it. Some school's may vary but as long as they are not too distracting and they are not inappropriate or vulgar then they should not be too much of an issue. I would cover them for an interview and during the interview, at an appropriate point, I would reveal to your employer that you have them and ask if they will be of any issue. In most cases the answer should be no as tattoos are far too common now a days, but if it is an issue you should ask if you must keep them covered as you did for the interview. Some want no tattoos that are visible, others do not want inappropriate tattoos that are visible. For your interview, I would consider covering your tattoos to the best of your ability. Making sure that you can not see them. And also making sure that during the interview, that is one of the questions that you ask.
