I usually have them take the extra work home and bring it back but they have not been doing that. You may want to reconsider how much independent time the students have to complete the assignments. However, if it is just a few students, I would utilize the downtime of the classroom such as silent reading time. If the student does take the assignment home, make sure the parents are aware that the assignments are incomplete class work that does need to be completed. A lot of times the students will not inform the parents of the extra assignments in their backpack. The answer might be to give less work or different work. The other answer might be to use class time differently allowing for more work time. If they cannot complete it that they will have to complete it during recess the following day. This might either inspire parents to work with student or encourage students to get work done at school. I often use that time for students to catch up on things if they need to. I've seen this implemented in a 5th-grade classroom. The teacher taught in groups 95% of the time. Each group consisted of students who were at the same level academically. If that is the case make sure you are giving your students the appropriate amount of time to finish their work, so they do not have to worry about extra assignments. If it is only a few students who need extra time to finish their assignments, I would utilize any downtime like silent reading or during centers. As well as, possibly talking to those students one on one to see if their might be issues on why they need extra time and see how we can solve that together. The students in the group should be able to help each other out and get it done faster. If it is just because the lesson is not fitting within the time schedule, I would try to time how long things are taking, how long they need to complete assignments, etc. and try to work out a time management plan based on that. Give them time in the morning to complete unfinished work, or contact parents and let them know you're sending unfinished work home. Considering sending the weeks unfinished work home on Friday and having it due Monday. Good luck ! If they are ESE than they most likely have an accommodation on their IEP that addresses this issue with extra time. Otherwise, this can be solved by making sure the classroom teacher pays attention to the time as he or she teaches the lesson. This will limit the excessive time teaching and give more time to students to complete their work. This way you can see why they need more time... are they struggling or not on task? If they are struggling they may need some appropriate accommodations to help them understand the subject matter. Sending work home isn't a help to a student who doesn't understand or isn't motivated to do work... it is just the opposite of what should be done. If they are not motivated they must be by the teacher, what is their interest, what will motivate them? Offer appropriate rewards for completion. Not all student work for grades and stickers! However, if you are set on sending the work home with students, write a friendly reminder and have parents initial the completed work. If this is not possible, have him finish his work during recess or in the morning or in the afternoon. Usually my students work independently or read in the morning and in the afternoon, work on their homework. During this time, you should be free enough to sit with the student and help him. You could try contacting the parents and making them aware that he is coming home with work that needs to e finished and brought back. But in countries like Finland that were lower then the USA and are now number 1 in education, they hardly assign homework. If they do assign it, its about quality versus quantity. I would recommend a few questions 3 to 5 versus 40 etc. You can always shorten the work load for them. Like if there was worksheet that needed to be done and some students were not done I would instruct the rest of the class to get things ready for the next day or explain what you are going to learn next class or go over some expectations. Maybe assign a realistic amount of homework to the entire class instead of just assigning extra work to these students as it could be making them feel singled out. Also, homework may alleviate issues with time management and all provide reinforcement of the material to the students. For students who have all their work completed this could be a free time for them to read books, use the computer, etc. I believe this would motivate the other students who have not completed their work to complete their work in time so that they too can enjoy this free hour of time to do things that interest them. When there is independent work or free time being done remind students that their other subject area work needs to be done before having free time and be open to helping students or allowing students to work together to complete activities to help then enhance understanding if they are falling behind. Sometimes help from another student can help students to better understand. You could incorporate more group work or discussions where everyone is to participate that way everyone has a chance to be more involved with the lesson. You could save independent work as a reflection of what they learned in class, that way the whole class has a chance to be more at the same pace. You could also make the reflection of the lesson a HW assignment so they think over what they did and use the beginning of next class to discuss.
