Ringleader!
During my level one internship I taught in a third grade classroom. My CT was absent 5 times during my internship all days I was there. One of the days I was there with out my CT we had a sub who did nothing but sit in the back reading a book while I did everything. I did not mind because I had been there for about a month and I knew the classroom routine. Also I thought of it as some practice. During or writing block I gave the students their assignment and most began to work right away. One student was pouting and refusing to do her work. I was very nice to the student and asked if she needed help or if she understood the assignment. She told me I understnd I am just not doing it. The student said it loud enough to where all the students hear. They all started laughing and one student said "she got told". This statement caused all the attention on this student and most of the students were ow getting off task. The sub was still sitting in the back not saying a word. I told the student and the class if anyone does not do their work I will just leave a note for the teacher saying they refused and got a zero for the day. Most of the students got back on track instead of the student who made the comment. A few minuted later she started breaking pencils and throwing them around the classroom. I moved the student behavior clip down and told her to pick them up. She told me no and continiued to do it. The sub finally noticed and stepped in and told her to pick them up. The student finally picked them up. About five minutes later the student yells across the room to me "get over here and help me". The whole class went crazy. They were laughing saying owwwww and being very loud. I said to the student I am your teacher for the day and you will not talk to me that way, if you need help you raise your hand. The student replied "Im not afraid of you". At that moment I knew I would never settle the class down with her in the room. I ended up sending her to the classroom next door for the day. Was this the right thing for me to do? If not what could I have done to fix the situation? |

You were right in not continuing to deal with the student in front of the rest of the class since the technique obviously did not work. I would have addressed the student directly, however, and told her she would get a zero for the day rather than addressing the entire class. The sub stepping in was probably also a bad thing for you since it made the students think the sub had the power in the classroom rather than you. Next time I would insist on handling the issue myself and I would immediately begin to use the consequences set in place for the breaking of any rules. |

I agree with this, I might have even taken the child out of the class earlier. |

I would have recommended sending her out as well. You must hold firm that you are the boss when the teacher is out. Also, have the teacher aware of the situation when she returns and the teacher should let that student understand you are a teacher in the classroom as well. |

First thing first, this student obviously has some affect on how the students behave in this class. Immediately speak to him one on one. See what is troubling the student and what sort of agreement you two can come up with. Convince him that you depend on him to behave and you know he can be a model student for you and for the other students to follow. When it comes to the parents, tell the parents that these misbehaviors will cause more problems for him especially when he gets older. |

Yes, that was the right thing to do. If she was interrupting other students learning, then sending her to the other classroom in a different environment was needed. |

Definitely the right thing to do. Students should never take away from other students ability to learn. She needs to be addressed by the teacher and the sub needs to be aware of the students behavior. |

You were right in sending her to a different classroom. It is not acceptable for any student to act that way to a teacher or substitute. In sending her to the other classroom, you set the standard for other students watching. |

I think the situation was mostly handled well, however the one change I would have made is that I would have sent the student to administration. It was clear she wanted to put on a show and hopefully an assistant principal would have whooped her into shape. I just don't think sending her to another class was a good idea cause she might have caused distractions there and that might have been seen as a reward to the other students; administration is clearly not a reward. |
