Parents who encourage their child to hit back
I have several parents tell me that they encourage their child to hit back if another child hits them. I have explained the school policy several times and the consequences, but they refuse to tell their child to not hit back. What should I do?

I would continue to make school expectations, rules, and procedures clear to students and their parents. Anytime that you can tie a review of school policies and procedures into the lesson would be beneficial for the students. Hopefully none of the students get in a fight but if it comes to that point it is best to follow school and county procedures in discipline. The parents may be upset that their child gets in trouble for continuing the violence after they have been hit but you can't bend the rules to please a few parents.

Honestly my parents told me the same thing. However for you I would remind the parents about the school rules and give better solutions for what to tell there students for when They get hit. Examples of this could be tell the students that if you get hit, run and get help. Better let the person who hit you get in trouble than you get in trouble.

I was also told to hit back. I think your idea is great and is a way to calm the situation down faster.

Alert the administration and have them speak to the parents. If this goes against school policy, parents need to understand the consequences of their child hitting another child.

I would go over the rules, handbook and procedures of the school when dealing with physical fighting. Inform the parents and stdeunts of the consequences of fighting in school such as expulsion and suspension, so that they understand that your school takes these offenses seriously

I would make sure to inform the student's parents about the school's expectations and that it is not okay for their student to be touching others even if they were touched first. They should take the situation to their teacher. If nothing changes I would then have a conference with them and the administrator about further action if the touching toes do not stop.

I wouldn't worry too much. It sounds like you did exactly what you should have. Just continue to say that we do not promote violence and try to calm down students and redirect them so there will be no fighting in your class.

I think your idea is great. You can't control what the students are told at home and you definitely don't want to create any problems. Making sure you did what you were supposed to is the best way to stay ahead of the game.
