Lack of involvement
A student in my class is not receiving the support she needs from her parents in order to further her education. There is no real push for her to get her work done. What can I do to help?

Have you established a relationship with the parents? Do you know anything about her home life? There could be underlying issues that you're not aware of. If you can try to get to the bottom of that, it might explain the lack of support and may help you make realistic suggestions that could help their involvement.

I agree with Keri. I would suggest learning more about the student's home life. Are they working parents? Is this an English Learning household? Is the family comfortable participating in the classroom verse at home alone with the student? There is always more to the story than meets the eye.

I would suggest talking with the student first, and if that doesn't help reach out to the parents and schedule an after school meeting to discuss any concerns you may have.

See if there are alternatives. For example, does the school offer any resources that can support the student? Are there any relatives or family friends that can fill that role? Remember, there might be issues the parents' control.

I would contact the parents and share your concerns about their child's lack of motivation. I would also talk with the student about personal grit and how they must advocate for themselves, as well. If the parents continue to ignore this, I would let administration know.

I would suggest reaching out to the family to schedule a meeting about the matter or even see if there are any services that the family can use for the student so that the student gets the support they need.

Try to establish a relationship with the parents. Set up a conference and try to come up with a plan in order to help the student.

In this sitions, think of the parents backgrounds and how it influence their lack of involvement in their children education. understanding their cultural backgrounds would be the first key to involve parents in supporting their children education.

Have a meeting with the parent and suggest a tutor to improve her skills. If there is a tutoring option in your school/program, be aware of what they offer and preset that information. If not, have a list of suggested tutors or programs that offer tutoring in the area ready for said meeting.
