Virtual Learning Requests
A student is struggling with math concepts during your virtual class. She has requested a hard copy of the textbook because she thinks she will have a better chance of understanding the material if she can have a book to use instead of doing it through the computer. The only problem is since your teaching online you don't have access to any textbooks. There is an in-person co-teacher at the school who is using your set of textbooks for her students. You've asked this teacher if you could assign one of the textbooks to this student for her use since she is struggling. The co-teacher says no because she is using all the textbooks and doesn't have an extra. What is the next step? Is there another solution to get this struggling student the help she needs?

Email other teachers to see if they have an extra hard copy of this book, if not then speak with the librarian or school administration and explain to them the situation. They should be able to place an order for a copy of the textbook.

I would upload PDFs of the material being covered so the student can print it out if she needs to.

I would first go to the library and see if there are any more copies. Otherwise you can ask the principal of what you could do to help the student. If this doesn't work, try to either find the book online for the student or you can copy the pages and give them the printout for the parts of the book they are working on. There is always a way to try and help the student, it is just a matter of finding the right person or the right resource, but there are plenty of resources to help this student not struggle with the content.

You could maybe ask the school librarian if there are anymore copies of the book, or take pictures or copies of the pages you need, if you are allowed to, in order to provide the student with a hard copy.

One possible solution is to scan the textbook pages and upload them as a pdf or discuss the possibility of accessing an online textbook from the publisher with the school administrators. Another solution could be to provide her a study guide of the material, this could be the work that is done in class instruction time.

I would recommend speaking with the co-teacher and see if one of her students would prefer a virtual textbook. That way they can reassign the textbook to the struggling student.
