Many of Mr. Smith's high school students have been adding her on Facebook, although she has not responded to any of the requests. She made a class announcement that she will not accept any friend requests until they graduate and are no longer at the school, is this appropriate? |

Yes, I think this is very appropriate and the best solution in this case. It is definitely not ok to be friends with or interact with students on social media as a teacher, no matter what their age. This could result in possible legal issues, such as a loss of a job, or worse. |

I don't believe that adding students on social media is appropriate while they are still in your classroom or underage. There is a thin line between cordial and too close for comfort. In this day and age, social media rules/restrictions should be set into place and broadcasted as soon as possible to students. |

I think it all depends. If the instructor has a professional Facebook used for the morally right reasons (i.e - helpful tips or videos pertaining to education, links to helpful resources, professional photos and posts, etc) then I believe the students should be able to utilize the inevitable obsession with social media. I believe it can be a great platform to relate to your students. |

I think this solution is appropriate. I have had many teachers before tell us that they were not allowed to have any of us on social media until after they have graduated. |

Yes this is appropriate. When I was in high school I remember one of my high school teachers making the same announcement. It is not appropriate for students to be friends with their teachers, especially them being underage and students and teachers should keep home and school separate as that aspect. After graduation is okay. |

My dad was an JROTC instructor and had the same issue. He did the same thing and made an announcement saying that he would not accept any friend requests from any students and I think this is a fair thing to do. There is definitely a line that neither teacher nor student should cross and the last thing anyone wants is for something to come across worse than what it actually is. |

The teacher could create a specific Facebook page for the class and ask students to get their parents permission to join i.e. Mr. Smith's 5th grade class 2021. |

I had a middle school teacher have the same issue. No, a teacher should not add their students on Facebook. It's a tad too personal. If in the future when that student is an adult and they would like to be aquiatences then I don't see an issue but there is a boundary between student-teacher relations |

Yes, I believe that this is appropriate, and that the teacher handled this very well. In high school, I also had a teacher who did this, and this teacher has left such an impact on my life. This teacher didn't allow me to follow them though until I graduated, and we still keep in touch to this day. This situation remains appropriate if the teacher isn't engaging in anything until after the student graduates and leaves the school. |

Yes, I think this is totally appropriate! The teacher should make his page private. I also believe interacting with the students on social media while they are his students would be against the code of ethics. |

If a teacher uses their real name the students are going to find them. If their page is public, they will see it. Social Media is a tool that can use in such a positive way. I know teachers who take picture with students at school events and post them (high school). The students are friended to the account as well. This teacher is a school favorite. One the other hand, this teacher has access to the students page if they notice anything different or off. Intervention or reporting a concern about a students to a councilor may help reestablish a student back onto the right path. Student flood social media... why not make a positive impact. |
