So, for example, you can explain the social or historical significance without going into too much detail about the belief system. As far as I know, you can talk about history but not belief systems. So you can mention that St. Patrick was a real person and he lived in Ireland, but you can't talk about Jesus being born on Christmas. If you have to explain anything just keep it factual. For example Christmas is a major holiday in the United States so we have these days off to celebrate it. There shouldn't be a problem if you are explaining the meaning behind a holiday, as long as you aren't inserting your own ideas into it. To be safe, let parents know ahead of time that you will be mentioning this subject in class, so they have the opportunity to provide their input on the subject.
