This applies to any age but I have used it mostly with younger elementary classes. I begin the class by asking how the students are doing, oftentimes this turns into a healthy time of talking about our days and sometimes allows students to be themselves and release any frustrations before they have a chance to take these out on other students or me during the lesson.

I think this a great opener and can easily capture the students attention. If you are short on time you can also consider using the thumbs up, side, and down to get similar responses without calling on each individual. Also, having students respond in one word can be presented as a fun game that allows you to reach your goal without taking up too much time!

I remember my teachers would do something similar to this. If it was the last class or period on a Friday and we finished early, we would all discuss our weekend plans, learning more about our classmates and teacher. This can also be done at the first period/class on a Monday through a warmup activity so students can share one fun or enjoyable things they did the weekend.
