After that, when they come to turn in the paper and their name is not there I would ask them to figure out what is missing. Additionally I could have a checklist for turning in work poster that students would reference. They will be able to look at this checklist and determine if they have meet al the criteria to turn in an assignment. Even in college students have a tough time remembering to put their name on a paper out of a class of 200. A teacher can simply say it at the beginning of the assignment. And the papers that don't have their name on their paper will get a point off. This was it is a simple point that students can learn and it also will remind students to hopefully remember their name. Did I answer every question? I have had various experiences for when I did not put names on my assignments. I have had assignments thrown away and have had to redo assignments because I have not put my name on assignments. With my students, I would want to keep assignments with no names in a bin and have those assignments available and if no has claimed the assignment, then the assignment is thrown away. If a student turns in an assignment without a name on it, they would have one chance to go back and put their name on it. If they did not go back and put their name on their paper, then the assignment would be thrown away. This is a very simple instruction that students have had to do since kindergarten, so it should not even be an issue with older students. To teach students to put their names on assignment you can make it interesting. For math assignments, they are to use red to write their name, science they use green, social studies uses blue, etc. This way they get in the habit of seeing a color name on their paper and this reminds them of the first thing they do is writing their name. If I as the teacher am to find a paper with no name I will post it on the board and the student to claim it will lose 2 points. This will not only reinforce them to write their names but also to know if they don't will lose points or may not recieve a grade at all. Make it interesting and fun for them. With every classwork have them write their names on each assignment with a different color pencil. Every time you do the assignment they will get excited to put their names and the next time they won't forget. This way 1. The student knows what to do without you having to explain it them 2. You have the opportunity to take away points if they do NOT fill it in If the students start to lose points, they will remember to write their name. Sometimes extra credit (although it sounds silly) every once in a while will help them stay on it. The students then have to highlight their name before they turn their paper in, which will remind them to write it if they have. Put the highlighters in a noticeable place that they will see before they put it in the bin. I would just inform them that will not receive a grade if they do not. You could also incorporate this into the daily schedule and eventually it will become a habit. For older students, intermediate elementary, I would provide a privilege for students who do put their names on all their assignments for the week. Your role is to teach self reliance and responsibility. If they do not put their name on their assignments, then they do not participate in the privilege. The student's mother actually came up with a really interesting punishment for her child. She made her child write his name on a ream of paper before he could play with his friends on a saturday. Since then the student does not forget to put their name on their assignments. I think this could be adapted as a detention or extra homework activity; just having the student write their name repeatedly will get the point across. Put signs in front of the turn in tray that say "Pause, Look for your name before turning in" and "Pause, Look, Turn-In". Model the behavior so that students understand that this is a procedure that you wish the students to complete. Be sure to communicate that if assignments do not have names, they will not be graded. I would have the teacher helper check for names on the paper when they collect them and the papers that do not have a name will be hung on the front whiteboard with a magnetic clip. If they don't put their name on their work, I tell them it counts as a missing assignment and they will sit out of recess for 5 minutes. Once it happened once, they never forgot again!
