What do I do with a 5th grade student caught stealing an ipod of another student? |

This should be immediately reported to administration. As punishment, I would have the student write an apology to the other student. Also I would do a lesson with the whole class about stealing and the consequences of stealing. |

I think for as old as they are and the severity of the crime then going to administration is very necessary. I was in a room where a first grader was stealing snacks and the teacher caught her and reported it to the parents, and it has stopped since. However. stealing an iPod is very intense. |

In these situations it is very very very important to see what your district or school wide rules are about stealing. Many times this can answer your question. |

I would contact the right school authorities. If you caught the student stealing yourself, I would talk with the student to see if that child understand the reprecutions of their actions. The next action I would take is to take it to the principal. I would also make sure that the student appologizes to the other. If this continues, then you may need to contact the school resource officer. |

If you caught them red handed their are policies in place by the school for stealing. I would send them to the office with a referral and keep a closer eye on them from now on. |

Since stealing is probably a school rule, you will ideally have criteria offered from the school for handling a situation like this. If one is not available, I would hold the iPod and contact the proper persons to provide guidance in handling the situation. I would then return the iPod to the proper person once the students' parents have been informed of the situation, and follow the established school guidelines in dealing with the student who stole the iPod. |

If there is proof the student did steal from the other student I would refer to the school rules and procedures to decide how to discipline the student. I would also involve the appropriate administration to give the student the consequences. |

As the teacher, do not jump to conclusions about theft. However, the first thing that I would do is confiscate the iPod until I can determine to whom it belongs. I would then report the incident to the on-site officer. The school should have a procedure to deal with the incident. |

First I would retrieve the stollen property, then I would call the on campus police officer. Students know what the rules are and some still chose to break them. Those students need to understand that when rules are broken you have to pay for what you have done. I would hope the police officer put him in cuffs and took him to the police station where his parents would need to come get him. Stealing is illegal and if he was cought doing that at 18 he would be spending nights in jail, not just hours. Teaching lessons at a young age may help t0 keep kids out of jail in the future. |

I would immediatley report this to adminstration and there should be a school wide procedure for this type of behavior. |

Stealing is a touchy subject because lots of proof is required in order to make an accurate accusation. If in fact the student was caught stealing, that student should immediately sent to the office for administration punishment being that it is probably a school rule but also instruct the students to have them put them names on everything that belongs to them to prevent this or wrong accusations. I would then send a letter home to the child who stole about the classroom behavior. Also a letter to the rest of the parents instructing them to put their childs name on their belongings and informative to the happenings in the class that day. |

I would right away report it to administration. They will usually handle it from there. Also tell your students to keep the electronics at home. |

If I in fact did see the student stealing another students ipod, i would write a referral for that student and have administration handle the matter as they chose. I would also mention this to the school guidance counselor to see if there are any extenuating circumstances that would cause this student to do this. |
