Learning Disability in Reading
Bobby has a learning disability in reading. He is overwhelmed by long reading passages, because he cannot read on grade level. Bobby needs to learn about main idea and supporting details. The teacher provides Bobby a story on his reading level. Bobby only has to identify the main idea while the rest of the class must identify the main idea and supporting details.
Are there other ways to address this student's need? How?

If you only ask Bobby to identify the main idea you are changing the assignment completely and not just modifying it to meet his needs. If you provide him a shorter passage or a passage on a lower Lexile level that still allows him to identify main idea and supporting details you are still addressing the standards but doing so in a way that allows Bobby to master the standards.

If Bobby's ability to read is the problem, rather than difficulty with the content area then he can complete the same assignment with a lower level book. Additionally, the story can be read aloud to Bobby r he could complete the passage with shared reading with an instructional assistant, and then he can complete the main idea and detail activity.

If Bobby is overwhelmed by long reading passages, you can allow him to work in steps. First getting him to find the main idea in the sentence or couple of sentences. Then allowing him to find the main idea in the paragraph. Next, he will need to find the main idea on the page. Finally, he will find the main idea to the passage. By breaking the passage into chunks, it will hopefully reduce his feeling of being overwhelmed.
