In-class assignments and large print materials
Malcolm's scores on in-class assignments and assessments improve when he is provided with large print material. The teacher provides Malcolm materials with larger print because she has observed that his comprehension also greatly improves.
Are there other ways to address this student's need? How?

It seems as though Malcolm has trouble with his vision. The first step that should be taken is to contact the school nurse to gain information on the most recent hearing/vision screening. A check of the student's permanent record file should also be done in order to find any past accommodations related to vision. In the classroom, the student should receive preferential seating. A parent contact would also be beneficial to determine if any vision problems have been reported in the past as well as encouraging a visit to the optometrist. |

I would send Malcolm to the nurse to have his eyesight checked out. Obviously there is a problem that needs to be addressed. If there is an eyesight problem, then his parent should take him to an eye doctor- glasses may solve the problem. If his eyesight is bad enough to where glasses do not help solve the problem completely, then his teacher should meet with the person in charge of 504 plans to discuss Malcolm's issue. This plan would consist of specific accommodations that would meet his needs. He would continue to receive large print material and sit in the front of the classroom.
I had a student last school year who had a rare eye disease. He needed everything in large print. He also had to have computer screens dimmed and enlarged. Light from electronics had to be dimmed and made larger so he could see the text and images better. The bright lights from electronics would trigger headaches, so I dimmed everything I could for him so headaches would not happen. Last year, his mom and I met several times to come up with different ideas on how to help him out- a few things we tried that were successful were getting him a magnifying glass to use on independent assignments (he would use this while wearing glasses) and printing his assignments and tasks on colored paper with large and bold print. |
