Other Health Impairment and Reading
Jacob is a ninth grade student who receives special education services under the category of Other Health Impairment. When reading, Jacob continuously blinks and moves his head, skips lines, omits or transposes words, and loses his place often, even when using a place marker. He sits at the teacher's computer so he can follow along during PowerPoint presentations. Are there other ways to address this student's need? How? |

Jacob's teacher could try and use a line cut out for him to use while he reads. This will prevent him from skipping lines, losing his place and skipping words. Also, his teacher may want to speak with his Special Education representative to place a listening device for Jacob to use. The teacher can pre-record a book, and Jacob could use the line cut out to follow along. This would also allow him to receive information from the book, while being accommodated based on his needs. |

The Special Education program in Jacob's school most likely has a highlighting place marker that may work for him. If whole sentences are too much, he may need to utilize one or two words at a time. There is an app called Read Quick that may help him. The teacher inputs a chunk of text, and the words per minute function is decided. One word at a time flashes across the screen and the student reads this way. I have seen this help students who struggle with following sentences and text wrapping. |

If this student is OHI due to his ADHD diagnosis, it may be that he needs to be re-evaluated by his doctor if he takes medication. A parent conference should be setup, data should be presented to show that the student's OHI is impacting his learning and his current accommodations and modifications are no longer enough for academic success. Parents may not realize this is the case, and set up an appointment with Jacob's doctor to discuss his medication. In a case like this one, it is always helpful to bring data that backs up your case. |
