Learner-centered teaching strategy
Susan used learner-centered teaching strategy model after a unit in her classroom culminated with oral reports given by the students. The students had been given the assessment criteria one week in advance of the report and they were given time in class to prepare the report. However, when the reports began, Susan was disappointed in the quality of the students' work. The students did not exhibit the behaviors outlined in the criteria (attention-getting introduction, clear speaking style, organization of thoughts, and so forth). It became obvious to Susan that the students did not know what an good oral report looked like.
What should Susan do to help her students understand proper oral reporting?

I am a firm believer in modeling. I believe that Susan should demonstrate how a proper oral report should be written by modeling one on a different topic than the students are working on. She should display it on the promethean board as she writes it so that the whole class can view it. As she models it, she should remind students of what they have learned in regards to attention-getting intro., clear speaking style, organization of thoughts, and so forth. In accordance to these reminders, she should have students give her ideas while writing the oral report.

Susan should teach students what a good oral presentation is and give examples of effective and ineffective presentations. Many students do not have a concept of presenting ideas orally and need to be taught to do so. Susan should teach and give examples of each of the criteria within the oral report. Susan should show them or give an example of an attention-getting introduction, clear speaking style, and organized thoughts. She should explain the importance of each of these as you are trying to convey thoughts to an audience and hold their attention. Susan should then let students revise their reports and give presentations again. A short class discussion should follow each presentation with positive feedback on what the student did well, and the criteria the student should focus more on in the future when completing oral reports.

Before the students were given the criteria for the report, the teacher should have modeled the process. Showing what was required would have assisted the students to see what was expected. This could be in the form of the teacher modeling each section, or a video of prior students that did a great job.
