Letter Sound Struggle
A student in Mrs. Lauer's class is struggling to identify letters. He has learned five letters and has been in school for 49 days. His mother expressed concerns of him having a learning disability due to family history. He is just not grasping the concept of letters and sounds. The letters are being introduced to him in small amounts, such as three a week and even one or two a week. Nothing seems to help. Any suggestions on what to do next? |

One thing to keep in mind is the student's language background. If the student is learning a language different than home, this may be a part of the challenge. Also, incorporating a variety of activities relating to the letters and sounds the student is working on is critical. This will enable the student to practice what they are learning, while the teacher records notes on progress. If progress is not being made, speak with team members that may have alternate strategies. After putting these strategies in place, check with mom to see if any progress is being made at home. If not, meet with school members to decide what steps to take next to help the student. |

I would try to put this student on interactive games that are on the internet. Since some children learn better from interacting with games with letters, it will help the student to recognize the letters even quicker. Also, the student can use shaving cream to form letters on his desk and surly should remember the letters if its five a week that the student is working with. Lastly, have the child cut out "w" letters in newspaper or magazine articles to get repetition of finding letters. |

Is this student in any kind of intervention program like RTI (Response to Intervention)? If not, this is a place to start. I know that for my students struggling, this program helps put goals in place and it also gets the counselor and parents involved to make sure that the student gets the extra help he/she needs. There are some great computer programs such as iREAD or Imagination Station that really help with this certain situation. The school may have to purchase "seats" for this, but it can be used as an intervention for sure. I know that both of these programs have helped my Kindergartners that struggle tremendously. |

Being creative and trying to make learning fun will help this student remember and want to learn. Repetition would work as well. Having a combination of writing, saying it out loud can help trigger their mind. There are multiple videos, activities, and things that the students can be interactive with to help them remember. The key is to make sure the student is having fun while learning, and having the teacher be positive through this time with them as well. |
