Retake Assessments
I allow students to come and retake. However, they must meet the requirement that they see me for tutoring. I do have a few students who have their own tutors, so I allow them to meet with them instead of staying after with me. However, I have a student who complains because their tutor continues to tell him that there are not correct answers within the choices given on the test they are going over. I prove to the student that there is and encourage him to come see me for tutoring. He doesn't, he continues with his own tutor. Again, it happens, but this time I have the students prove to me why the correct answer is what it is. It is like the tutor isn't understanding the concepts we are completing in class. How is he supposed to retake if his tutoring can't even guide him correctly? What should I do? |

It seems that the tutor may be hindering learning more than helping. I would call the parents and really urge them to make arrangements for this student to see you, the classroom teacher, for tutoring. The parents should realize that the classroom teacher would be the best resource for tutoring. This, along with many technological resources, could provide enough materials and instruction for the student to succeed. |

I agree with your solution. The parents need to be notified as soon as possible so the student does not continue to fall behind. |

I would advise the teacher to have a conference with the child's parents first. The teacher can then discuss the issues that are going on wrong with the tutor and their child's performance in your class. Then maybe the parents can have a talk with the tutor themselves. Maybe after the parents have a sit down with the tutor, the tutor can come in and meet you, and try to learn the new concepts that you are teaching your students so she can guide the student she is tutoring in the right way. |

Since the student prefers an outside tutor, it is probably also the parents choice as well. You should have a conference with the parents, and invite the tutor. This would be an opportunity to discuss the students academics, as well as show the tutor strategies that you are teaching in class. The tutor could then use these strategies with the student to further enhance learning. By doing this, you would be meeting the student and families needs, while providing the tutor with an eye-opening view of how you teach, and what you expect. |

I would send an example of how we are solving the problems in class home so that the tutor can review and assist. I would also try to reach out to the tutor so that we can hopefully get on the same page to better help the student. |
