Help during test
Mrs. Chin is a fourth grade teacher who is struggling to help a low performing student with assessments. He always wants to sit right beside her to take a test. She usually reads him the material because she wants to test math skills, not reading. However, he has gotten used to this and refuses to test without her right there beside him. She must continue to monitor the other students, and help him too. What should she do? |

Mrs. Chin will need to ween him off the close assistance when testing. Another solution would be to ask a paraprofessional to come in and help monitor or help the student with special needs. |

Great idea!, I would inform the student that my job is to be there as a teacher to the entire class and not just to ne student. I would try to set up a paraprofessional also to come on and maybe sit next to him. |

I agree with this solution. Weening the child off of this type of testing will help them become more independent in the class room. |

I agree with this solution. The student cannot be dependent on this teacher for the rest of the student's academic career. The student should be limited to the help that the teacher can give during the test. If the student needs special needs to complete a test then the teacher can make time for the student after or before the test. |

Mrs. Chin should have a conversation with the student about his dependence on her. She should explain she is there as his teacher, but there are also other students in the classroom also. Have the student a special place in the classroom for him to take the assessment. This will still allow him a special place, but allowing the teacher to still monitor other students. |

I think having the student take their test in a different area around the classroom would be beneficial for both her and the student. Not only will she be able to walk around the classroom to help the other students if needed, but she can also make her rounds towards the student that is dependent on her while still keeping an eye on the other students in the classroom. This may also help the student learn to have some independence from her while taking their test. |

I would develop a system of checking in with the student for during tests. The student would be given a few sticky notes to write questions for the teacher for times in between check-ins. I would start off with a higher number of check-ins and then decrease them over time. For example, at the beginning of the test I would go over and explain the directions for the first few and remind the student to write down questions on the sticky notes. Encourage them to do their best and that you will be back soon to see how they are doing. Then, during the test stop by to answer any questions and provide praise for when they are working independently. At the end of the test, conference with the student and see how they feel they did. Answer any last questions and provide praise for how well they worked independently or review how to use the sticky notes and your testing expectations. |

Mrs. Chin can record herself on tape and have the student listen so that she can continue to monitor the other students. She can also try to partner the student with a high performing student who only reads the questions and nothing else. |

she could begin testing him in a small group where the teacher circulates around the group and can get back to him often this slow transition should allow him to become less dependent on the teacher. |

I would slowly wean this student off of having this sort of assistance during a test because even if an paraprofessional came in to monitor the other students, when the student moves to the next grade, there may not be an opportunity for the student to have this type of assistance again, which makes this more of an issue. |

Mrs. Chin needs to have a conversation with the student and build his confidence. Ensure them they you are available for help when they need it but that other students may also need help. At first stop by their desk more periodically and then slowly ween off. |
