STAR test assessment question
A school recently decided to pilot the STAR test. This is the first time 1st graders were given a computer test that wasn't read to them. It is also only 35 questions and it is timed. Does anyone have any experience with this test or how to prep students for it? |

In an effort to prepare students for taking their first computer test, teachers should allow the students the opportunity to learn the basics of what they will need to know, to be able to take the test. This means that the students should be practicing taking quizzes on the computer long before they will have to take the STAR test. The questions on the test should be level appropriate and easy for the students at a first grade level to understand. |

I agree! The more comfortable students are with the computer and not afraid, the better they will do on the STAR test. |

Give the students weekly assignments on the computer to familiarize them with using a computer. Also, encourage the parents allow the students to work on the computer or laptop if permissible. |

STAR testing is something my district uses consistently. Like the other suggestions, preparing your students to take the STAR is almost impossible. STAR is designed to set a level for students based on what they already know and do not know. Many of the items on STAR is content students are not yet familiar with. However, there is STAR Reading and STAR Early Literacy. In the Early Literacy portion, the passages are audible. Also, the time can be adjusted by an administrator, usually your Media Specialist has access to that feature. We have to adjust times for our students with IEPs. |

I have given the STAR test before. For first graders there is no way to prep students except to teach them how to use the computer. |
