Math Swap
Kasey recently had four of her students randomly switched to a relief class. One of the switched students' parents contacted Kasey explaining that she is not happy with the switch. The parent explains that she believes the switch will disrupt the momentum the student has worked hard to build. Kasey Forwards the email to her grade level AP who tells Kasey to respond that the switch was random and the new teacher would be working closely with all previous teachers to meet the needs of all students. The parent responds that she is not happy with the explanation and would like her student switched back. What should be done to appease the parent without being unfair to other requests that were denied?

The teacher should work with the administration and follow the appropriate protocols.

Great suggestion. The parent must go to the administration because it sounds like it's out of the teachers hands.

I think Kasey should not allow the switch to take place, as clearly that student is one who takes a while to adjust to a learning environment, and I think that Kasey is the best person to instruct that child. It may not make the other teacher happy, but she was not as familiar with that student anyhow, and it makes the student and the parents of the student happiest.

People should not be moved at random, especially not after a school year has already started. That is unfair to everyone.

This seems like a good solution. Keeping the student's needs in mind is important.

I would ask the new teacher if it would be okay for the parent to possibly sit in on a lesson to show that she is working well with the students. If the parent still does not approve I would have a meeting with the guidance counselor and the parent to see if things could possibly be worked out some how.
