Asthma in PE
Coach Lowe has several students that have asthma and often forget their asthma pump when they come to class. She has to record scores for every student for the Fitnessgram assessment. One of the tests the students must complete is the Pacer Test which measures the student's cardiovascular endurance. Three students forgot their pump on the day of the assessment. What can she do to accurately measure their cardiovascular endurance while still using the Pacer Test?

This is a tough case. I would be afraid to make the students do anything strenuous due to the fact they do not have their inhaler. It would be very difficult to assess someone's cardiovascular endurance and get a true reading if they do not have their pump. To be on the safe side I would contact the students parents and not assess them without their pump. There are health risks involved and no need to jeopardize your certificate by trying to assess the cardiovascular endurance of these students knowing they do not have their asthma pumps.

If the student does not have their inhaler on the day of the test, they need to be given an opportunity to make it up. When a student misses a day for the state standardized test, there are makeup days offered. Try this and stress the importance of this test to parents so that they make sure their child has his/ her inhaler on day of test.

This is a good idea. Students who do not have their inhaler should not take the pacer test that day. They should be offered a makeup.

I would probably not assess the student that day because of health risks that could occur. I would also enforce some type of punishment for students that repeatedly forget their pumps on assessment day because this can affect their student growth if they are often not being assessed.

I would say that having the students do what they can and what they are comfortable with would be the right way to go about this.

Coach Lowe cannot accurately administer the cardiovascular endurance test that day for those three students. The pump is not something they find important. Assign them a failing grade. Something has to motivate these students to bring their pump. Whatever that "something" is, use it. Contact the parents to make them aware of the importance of their child having their pump.

I feel she should get a pump that can remain in class.

I totally think they should be able to make it up. My sister suffers from Asthma and she needs her inhaler for exercise. It's not good to push students too hard. A make up day won't hurt anyone.
