Bullying
One little girl in my class suffers from fetal alcohol syndrome. She is constantly being bullied because she looks and acts different from the other kids. What are some ways to help the other students understand, yes, she might be different, but thats no reason to bully her? |

This is a great opportunity for students to become more tolerant of people with differences and those who are unique. There could be a project in the classroom where students come up with all the things that make them unique. They have 2 dads, birth marks, ect... The teacher would really need to lead this topic so students are comfortable sharing this information. I think a letter should go home to parents about what is happening in the classroom and what the project will be. Allow other students to reflect on how they would feel if someone made fun of them... |

I like this idea. It doesn't single out one student, but rather opens the kids' eyes to the fact that everyone is different. |

Bullying needs to be reported to other administrators. It should never be handled just within the classroom. It is a serious situation that can cause great harm and can spiral out of control. Each teacher should follow the procedures put in place within their school or district. At the very least, this situation should be brought to the guidance counselor so they can set up a plan of action. |

I agree bullying should be taken seriously, but I would first raise awareness, then go this if needed. |

There are many great ideas! But, I feel awareness is key. I would create a week long awareness project for the entire school that brings awareness to various exceptionalities. Just from conducting this project throughout a week period, the rest of the teachers would most likely create assignments and classroom discussions within the classroom. This would help spread information about various exceptionalities for students and hopefully would be enriched into deep conversations. |

I really like this idea, although I wouldn't personally focus on it for an entire week. However, I could definitely see how this could be sprinkled throughout the curriculum to ensure that the students really listen to the message you're trying to send out. |

Teach an engaging lesson on bullying to your class. Take some time in your school day to teach the importance of it. There are a lot of lessons online that are on anti-bullying. |

This is a good opportunity to teach about differences in people, yes I agree. Students should be taught tolerance and learn to embrace each other's differences. At the same time, they should be taught about bullying and how bullying can destroy a student's self esteem. Bullying is serious and in some cases has even caused students to take their own lives. Bullying will not and should not be tolerated and should be grounds for serious consequences up to and including suspension and expulsion! |

bullying is a serious issue that should not be ignored. Be sure that the first thing you do is report this to the proper authorities at your school so it can be handled . After is has been reported, I think that the best thing to do in this situation is to raise your students awareness about fetal alcohol syndrome so they have better understanding of their classmate. I would also do a lesson with the students about tolerance and accepting people even if they are different because we are all different from each other, but we still have to get along. |

This is where good social skills are key. Have a project on this specific syndrome, or allow students to pick their own syndrome. This will allow students to know that people are different and may allow them to know why people are different. What causes the differences, etc. |

I would talk to your class as a whole without the girl in your class and explain to them that everyone is different and that bullying will not be tolerated in your classroom. Talk to the administrators at your school because bullying needs to be reported and if it continues report the students who are bullying to the office. |
