Preparing for a substitute.
As teachers, there has been times we take a much needed time off. The disadvantage in doing just this, preparing for a sub. When I know I will be missing a day, I go to my emergency sub kit. This kit includes fun and easy things for the sub to administer to the students, but still a learning activity. My sub kit is something I have built in advance, so I can sit back and enjoy my vacation days.

Having a sub kit is a great way to ensure that there is no downtime during the day. I just got back from maternity leave and understand all too well how important good sub plans are. The day with a sub can be stressful for the students and the sub if the proper actions are not taken ahead of time. Sometimes we have the luxury of planning for a sub, but in some cases we do not anticipate being out. It is the times we do not anticipate being absent that we need to make sure we have something effective and meaningful for our students to work on while we are gone. I have found sub plans to be full of busy work at times. Sub plans do not have to just be coloring and cutting sheets. Students can partake in meaningful and beneficial assignments when a sub is present. It is the job of the teacher to prepare ahead of time and take the time to have things in order for the event they are out of the classroom. I appreciate your post.

I also have a "sub tub" in my classroom. It works great! I have a list of each of my students and have also highlighted helpful students. All health concerns of my students are listed as well. The "sub tub" holds all important information and five days worth of lesson plans for emergencies. Each of the activities cover map skills which is something my 6th graders struggle with throughout the year. It is always great for them to get a little practice!

This is a great idea, because all the kids usually hate when a sub comes and teaches because they never know what is going on.

I think the sub tub is a great idea. I have substituted in the past and wish more teachers would have it available.
