Writing Assignments
When giving the students a writing assignment, I think the best way to ensure their success is to give them a rubric to follow. Give the students time in class to brainstorm and draft, but have the students revise and redraft on their own time. Having the students have a rubric to follow will ensure they understand what is expected of them. |

I definitely agree with you post. I teach fifth grade writing and it is definitely a beast sometimes. My students have a tendency to not want to elaborate on anything, much less their writing. I definitely agree that rubrics are a must have when it comes to effective writing. I enjoy having rubrics in my graduate classes to guide what I am doing and know what is expected of me. I want my students to know what is expected of them. A rubric gives my students an idea of what their quality of work should be to receive a certain grade. There is no grey area with a rubric. Students know what they must do to receive the grade they want. I use rubrics for lots of things in my classroom but writing is definitely the area where they are most effective and useful. I think it is important for students to learn to use a rubric at a young age so they are familiar with them as they go throughout their higher years of school. |

This tip sounds like a great idea. I definitely agree that you should leave a rubric, just so the students know your expectations for the writing assignment. |
