Group work and grading
When it comes to group work, do we grade the group as a whole or individually. When having group projects I provide a rubric that breaks up the project into however many people there are in the group. IE/ if there are 4 group members, the rubric will be broken in 4 parts. One for each student.

I will also have the students of the group grade each other. As the grades come in I average them together to give me the individual score.

I feel it is best to give both a group participation grade as well as an individual grade. The group can rate each others participation or you can monitor the participation during the group-work using a prepared checklist of sorts as you walk around the room. The individual grade should be based on actual work completed by the student.

This is a great idea so everyone knows what job is theirs.

I think grades should be given to the group for the final product and the individual for their participation and role in the group. All the students in the group would get the same "project grade", and then they could give each other grades for their individual participation, which, along with the teacher's observations, would be the individual part of their grade.

I agree having a grade for both work and individual participation is important to avoid issues with the assignment.
