Using whole group positive reinforcements
Positive reinforcements can be ideas, items, etc. that influence a person to display a certain result or act a certain way in hopes of recieving that reinforcement. The example of a WHOLE GROUP positive reinforcement is below.
*Introduce your class to an empty jar. Tell them that it is their job as a whole class to fill the jar up with marbles. The class can earn marbles by making smart choices altogether. If one person slips or does not make a smart choice during that time then no marbles will be put in the jar. Place 3 or 4 marbles into the jar and find something that the class has done pretty good with as a whole. For example, "I love the way everyone came in so quietly this morning and got to work very quickly by starting on their journals. For that, I am going to put some marbles in the jar." Congratulate them on earning their first marbles. Provide other examples of when the students may earn marbles for their jar (Standing in a quiet/straight line, everyone completing classwork or homework, having good behavior when a substitute teacher fills in for you, etc.)
*What happens when the class has fill the jar up? The first day you introduce the class to the jar tell them that they get to chose their reward. Go ahead and vote on the reward the first day so that the students know what they are working for. You may want to help guide this discussion through. Make sure that the students have the ultimate choice on what they would like as a reward. Record the top three (appropriate) choices and have the students vote on their favorite. Use whatever reward won as the ultimate reward for filling up the marble jar.
This really encourages students to work and encourage each other to have great behavior as a whole class. It gives the students something to work for and something to look forward to. Not to mention, it can be fun in the process, but even more fun when you have reached the top of your jar. :) |
