Case: Silent Period
Grigor is in my 4th grade classroom. He came to the US last year with his family from Bulgaria. He was in 4th grade at our school last year as well. He was retained in 4th grade because he did not develop his English language skills. I learned about a "silent period" that children go through when they learn a new language. My guess is that Grigor is in the silent period. But it does not make sense to me that he would be in the silent period for almost two years. He does not say anything in class. He does not socialize with his classmates either. He can read and write in simple English though. His parents tell me that he acts completely normal at home and he is able to communicate with English speaking people at home when they have guests. This is really puzzling. I have to find a way to communicate with Grigor and discover what is holding him back from communicating with people at school. I need some help.

I recommend reaching out to this student through using a knowledge of Bulgarian culture. Find something that Grigor likes and reach out to him using it. In the silent stage of development, children need to express themselves, and this can only be accomplished if you can find a way to break through the culture barrier. Encourage him to express himself in any way that he finds enjoyable. Art, music, and writing all help, but also be sure to build trust between the two of you by encouraging him in any way that you can. |

| Comments: As a teacher I would never do this. I have learned that almost every ESOL student goes trough a silent period before they begin to talk. Students need to hear the language before they can mimic it and I do not believe that you should try to get a student to talk if they do not feel comfortable yet. |

| Comments: Creating trust between teacher and student is key here. Also getting him to speak in a non judgmental environment is super important. It's very possible that even though no one is judging his speaking/writing skills that he may very well be judging himself. Getting him to read a book out loud to a pet is a good idea for building confidence and getting him to relax using the new language as he knows his pet will not correct or judge him in any way academically. |

The assumption that the issue is a cultural barrier which could be solved by having the student talk about their native culture strikes me as treating him simply as a member of a group instead of trying to reach the individual. If the child wants to talk about his native culture, that would be fine, but it shouldn't necessarily be the knee-jerk reaction when ascertaining what the child might like to talk about. |

During the silent period, the teacher should use gestures and role-playing to model instruction for the English language learner. Ask questions that can be answered with yes or no responses, or either or responses. This makes it easier for the student to participate without having to say or know an abundance of English words. |

| Comments: I don't think this is a completely accurate solution. I don't necessarily believe that it is a culture difference. If he has shown signs that he can speak English and can be socially normal at home, I believe it is just a matter of finding common interest with other students, like you said with art or music, but not necessarily on a cultural basis. |

| Comments: We are trying to teach these students our culture so I think it is respectful for us to learn theirs. He could possibly be more relaxed if he heard familiar topics. I really do think that this is an issue that really will require a lot of parental involvement. |
