  Case: Silent Period
Grigor is in my 4th grade classroom. He came to the US last year with his family from Bulgaria. He was in 4th grade at our school last year as well. He was retained in 4th grade because he did not develop his English language skills. I learned about a "silent period" that children go through when they learn a new language. My guess is that Grigor is in the silent period. But it does not make sense to me that he would be in the silent period for almost two years. He does not say anything in class. He does not socialize with his classmates either. He can read and write in simple English though. His parents tell me that he acts completely normal at home and he is able to communicate with English speaking people at home when they have guests. This is really puzzling. I have to find a way to communicate with Grigor and discover what is holding him back from communicating with people at school. I need some help.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
My thoughts immediately went to the filmstrips Christina Igoa had her ESOL students create to help get them out of the silent period and to begin interacting. She found huge success getting students to break out of their shell using this method.

But also, nothing is mentioned about Grigor being involved in any sort of ESOL program there at the school. This is something that should be looked into so that he can get the help he needs to begin feeling more comfortable at school. Since he communicated with English-speaking guests at home, I highly suspect his problem is that he doesn't feel comfortable.

Comments: I also was wondering if he was in some kind of ESOL program, if not, that's obviously why he is having trouble keeping up with the curriculum that native English speakers his same age are doing. Great response.

Comments: I like the idea of using Christina's methods to break Grigor out of his shell. Also he should already be in some sort of ESOL program if he is not already like you said.

Comments: I agree with this solution! I think that ESOL services and lessons will be truly beneficial to Grigor and help him to feel more comfortable.
