  Case: Smelly Kid
I guess I am still considered a novice teacher because I have been teaching for four years only. I am an elementary school teacher who teaches in a mostly White suburban setting. Couple of weeks ago a new student joined my classroom. He and his parents recently moved from Eastern Europe. His father works at the local university as a music professor. I am not sure what his mother does. He is a wonderful child. Although he speaks little English, he tries to participate in class activities and to make friends with others in the classroom. Couple days after he arrived, I noticed a strange smell around him. I was sure that it was body odor. The other students in the classroom started noticing it too. They started making fun of him. I learned in my multicultural classes when I was at the university that not all cultures promote taking showers everyday, and that body odor is not considered a problem everywhere in the world. Now I have a big dilemma. If I tell my student about it, I might embarrass him. If I sent a note to his parents, I may appear disrespectful toward their culture. But the way he is treated in the classroom by the other students is becoming a real problem. What should I do?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Hygiene can be a sensitive subject but I think it's best to tackle this dilemma head on. You could do a mini lesson in health on bodily hygiene and have the students journal about ways they take care of their bodies. Drawing pictures or writing could show you insight on how he takes care of himself; then you could write back or have mini confrence with the child to discuss other ways to extend his normal routine. Talking to his parents is also an option. Asking them if the son has expressed any troubles with his classmates to then lead you in to a discussion would be a safe way to approach the problem. As long as you approach the situation carefully and show you're expressing the best interest for everyone I believe the problem can be addressed without hurting anyone's feelings.

Comments: This is a good solution for this type of problem. Providing a lesson for the entire class does not single out one student and also approaching the students parents carefully is extremely important. You do not want to offend and the teacher expressing concerns for their childs best interest is a good way to approach this sitation.

Comments: Hygiene is a topic that is relevant to all students. If students do not feel like their personal hygiene is an issue presently in their lives, it might become an issue later. Stressing that it is a topic to be aware of all the time and on top of all the time will be helpful for not just the individual student with the situation but with all of them.

Comments: I believe I would approach and talk to the parents first before doing the class lesson on hygiene. I agree that it is a sensitive issue and that you need to understand the child's background and culture. Then if you feel that there is a need go ahead from that point and implement a lesson plan on hygiene as a whole class. It will probably help the other students to understand cultural differences and not to hurt other classmates' feelings.

Comments: Even though a class talk on hygiene is useful, I doubt it would affect any change, particularly with a student who isn't about to change from one of their own ingrained cultural norms to one that is based on a brief lesson their American Teacher gave them. Also, contacting the parents is a bad idea, insensitive I would feel. How bad is this smell, is there a hygiene issue? It would be best to find out if the child feels hurt by the teasing. If so, maybe send him counseling? if things escalate, provide discipline to the students who are teasing this child, and maybe have a mini conference with this child and see where he stands on the issue, and then if things still escalate perhaps set up a meeting with the parents and take the steps that come from there.

Comments: I don't think that incorporating a mini lesson on health and hygiene is the way to go. Yes, that is a very important topic to cover but with a situation like this, the students would definitely know that you are ultimately targeting the child with body odor issues. As a teacher, you may think this solution would be helpful but overall, I think it would cause more damage than good. It's not that you would necessarily be targeting the student, but it could be twisted into that by his or her peers. I think that the best way would be to maybe carefully address the parents in a meeting.

Comments: I would say that this is a good idea, BUT since the student have already started to make fun of him, then presenting this minilesson may be obvious. We don't want to further embarrass him. Comments: The first part of this solution is a great idea to keep in indirect and approaching the whole class in the importance of hygiene. However, I do not think a teacher should have one on one time with talking about a child's hygiene routine. Instead, open the classroom floor on ideas on how to have good hygiene. After this lesson take place I would suggest giving the student who "smells" a week or so to see if he takes action on the hygiene lesson. If the issue continues of the "smell" and the bullying I suggest a meeting with an admin about the issue before confronting the parents. In addition, to approaching the students who are bullying as that is a very inappropriate behavior.

Comments: This is a great problem solution while integrating an important lesson for children to learn. I would conference with the parents and student simultaneously and be respectful of their culture and use the sandwich method to stress your attempt is to prevent the child from further experiencing bullying and exclusion which may cause emotional distress.

Comments: I agree. I think all students need to be educated on hygiene as well as how it differs in different cultures without making it too direct. I think this is also something I would talk to ADMIN about, just in case they can offer some advice as well, and so that they will be made known of the situation in case talking to parents doesn't go over well.

Comments: I think it is great to give the student the chance to see what the norms of hygiene are here in America. Depending on how the lesson goes it might be beneficial to have students share their opinions in a constructive way so the new student can hear how hygiene is viewed by their peers.

Comments: Having a class discussion on hygiene I do not believe will help the situation. As another person stated the other students might understand why you are having the lesson and it can potentially lead to more harassment. This is a very tricky scenario because there is not exactly a clear answer that can benefit all parties. Speaking with the student's parents might be the best solution, and maybe even telling other student's parents the situation might allow them to speak with their own children about different cultures and their beliefs.

Comments: Addressing the problem with a mini-lesson on hygiene is a good idea because it reinforces the importance of hygiene and isn't necessarily calling the child out. Comments: I do not feel like the mini lesson is a good approach. I understand where you are coming from, but you would be teaching him how Americans take care of their bodies. I know he will eventually have to adapt, but I feel like this approach could offend the family. Also, everyone in the class would know that you were talking about the kid with the body odor, so they become singled out. I think the best approach is a face to face with the parents, not in front of the children.
