Case: Math and Social Justice! No No!
Recently, I read a report in a national magazine on income levels of different groups of people in the US. The report especially featured income differences between males, females and different ethnic groups. Some of the statistics were very disturbing. For example, women holding the same job as men with same number of years in the job made considerably less money in most of the states. Differences between ethnic groups were even more disturbing. I decided to use these data in my math class with my 5th graders in a lesson on graphing. The purpose was for the students to be able to interpret graphs and create graphs using the information provided. Students enjoyed the lesson and learned some social justice lessons. Apparently a lot of my students talked to their parents about what they had learned in class when they went home. I received notes from about 10 parents the next day simply indicating that what I taught in my math class would lead to hatred among my students and that I should not be wasting their children's valuable time. Rather, they suggested, I should teach math with no controversial materials. I completely disagree with them and I plan to use similar materials in my other courses as well. However, my principals asked me to send an explanation to those parents. I know my explanation will not stop the complaints. How should I go about this potentially long battle? Or should I take the short cut simply remove such content from my lessons?

If you feel strongly about sharing this with your class, I would not take the easy way out by removing the content from your lessons. If the principal has asked you to send an explanation home, I would simply state that you were trying to tie in real-life scenarios with your math lessons, since almost every child has asked at one time or another, "When will we ever have to use this outside of school?!" I would also say that you did not create the data and should not be blamed for the outcomes that the United States has produced, but that you will make sure to convey unbiased information and only allow facts to be taught. |

| Comments: Your idea would be extremely useful. I did however also mention in my solution that maybe he should let the parents know he cares about their feelings by setting up parent teacher meetings. This way they can both let their concerns out and discuss what needs to be done. |

| Comments: I don't think a teacher can just do something in class just because they feel strongly about it, and supporting your teaching practices with cliches such as the one you stated about math being used outside of school is not going to strengthen your argument. If you feel strongly about a teaching practice you are receiving criticism about from administration and parents, the only way you can take up cause is if you have data that supports students success and makes what you did in the classroom relevant. If that does not exist, in good consciousness you cannot continue these practices in the classroom. |
