  Case: Silent Period
Grigor is in my 4th grade classroom. He came to the US last year with his family from Bulgaria. He was in 4th grade at our school last year as well. He was retained in 4th grade because he did not develop his English language skills. I learned about a "silent period" that children go through when they learn a new language. My guess is that Grigor is in the silent period. But it does not make sense to me that he would be in the silent period for almost two years. He does not say anything in class. He does not socialize with his classmates either. He can read and write in simple English though. His parents tell me that he acts completely normal at home and he is able to communicate with English speaking people at home when they have guests. This is really puzzling. I have to find a way to communicate with Grigor and discover what is holding him back from communicating with people at school. I need some help.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
This is a situtation where you have got to learn as much about Grigor as possible. You need to find a way to have Grigor open up, whether its through a personal converstation about his hobbies or something else he finds interesting. It would also be beneficial to ask students to befriend Grigor and try to help him open up to them.

Comments: I agree with you. It is very important to find ways to motivate Grigor to open up. I think if student friendships would help Grigor feel safer and more comfortable. But if he has been silent for two years, I have a tendency to think that Grigor's problem is much bigger and may require outside or more professional help.

Comments: I think this is a great idea for many reasons. Grigor might just feel unwanted, so he decides to keep to himself for the most part. He might think that no one wants to be his friend because he doesn't know English aswell as they do, so he just observes. It is hard enough making new friends, but when a students knowledge is limited it makes things even harder. Having the other students try to talk to him and be his friend could really help him a lot and make him feel very encouraged.

Comments: I think if the student is already uncomfortable in the classroom and doesn't communicate with you or his peers, he would be extremely uncomfortable if students approached him and tried to befriend him.

Comments: Great ideas. Communicating with him first is important to gaining his trust. Also, pairing him up with a couple students might help him socialize a little more.

Comments: I agree with this solution because I believe love and friendship triumphs all! Hopefully having other students attempt to befriend Grigor will help him in opening up and wanting to communicate more.
