Why did pioneer families "meet up together" as stated in the story?
In the story the author writes about pioneer families that "meet up" together to travel to the West.  Why would these families find this important when they didn't even know each other?  Use details from the story to help support the reasons why pioneer families joined a group. Give specific examples from the story and provide some of your own reasons based on the other examples.

Pioneer families were facing a year of traveling through a rough environment.  They needed a large group for support and basic survival.  Examples from the story tell how, "they would share tools, food and help deliver babies." Basically any problem in everday traveling and life was challenging and there were many people to contribute to make the journey possible.  Other examples could be as simple as repairing a wagon wheel or tent, allowing children to play together and learn from books, take turns with chores and duties of everyday life.  They could also have difficult tasks such as illnesses to tend to, running out of supplies and finding more, or needing to rescue a family or wagon from the rough unknown land.
