What was important to the pioneers of the United States during the 1840's?
The author writes about the people and families that travel west. He tells about the people "sharing tools, planning trips, getting to know each other well and forming communities." Use the information from the story to describe what was important to them. For example, describe what qualities a pioneer would have to make the journey west.

It was important for pioneers traveling west to spend a great amount of time planning in preparation for their trip. In the story, families needed to plan the route, what tools to bring, building materials and food supplies. Moving west for a year in the wagon train brought families very close together. This provided support during the survival of the difficult journey. They could use support with "child birth, extra supplies and tools." When reaching the west, they demonstrated their traits for hard work by building communities and improving the west. The pioneers were excellent planners that demonstrated team work, perserverance during hardships and a work ethic that convinced other people to "move west".
