Flexing your muscle...
In order to make sure that all teachers are involved in maintaining and building the morale of the school, the principal has mandated that each teacher sign up for extracurricular school activities duties as well as extracurricular development team and/or board that they must assign to. Many teachers complain that their time and energy is weighing thin due to the extreme expectancy of their dedication outside of school hours despite their own personal obligations. The principal then informs them that their inability to commit to these duties and development teams affect their end-of-the-year evaluations. If you were the teacher, what would you think? |

Now this is a very tough situation. I understand that the principal is trying to build morale, but it seems that is only bringing it down. Was this mandate discussed with your school leadership team (i.e. assistant principals, department heads, grade chairs, etc.) before it was implemented? Maybe this issue could be discussed with the leadership team and possible alternatives could be discussed for those teachers who have little time to complete these new duties. As a teacher at a high school I already feel pulled a million different ways, if this was then required on top of that would not be something I was happy about either. I do not think that is fair that the principal is then knocking those who are unable to complete these requirements on their end of the year evaluations. This doesn't sound ethical to me. |

I believe that the situation that the principal is putting the teachers in is very inappropriate. Putting in hours outside of the classroom is almost expected of a teacher, but this goes far beyond that, especially since it is mandated. Also, having this affect end-of-year evaluations is ridiculous. First, I would speak to my peers and determine if they feel the same way. If they do then I would schedule a meeting with the principal and address the problem. If this still does not work then I would speak to the county or school board about how the principal is behaving inappropriately and mandating extra time outside of regular hours that affect evaluations. |

This is definitely tricky. Of course meetings, and school functions will happen from time to time where you are going to have to sacrifice some of your personal time, but I do not see how he can make (or threaten) you to do these extracurricular activities. What about people with other jobs? You may want to contact someone at the board. |

I do not think that it is fair for the principle to force teachers to be involved in extracurricular activity activities and being penalized if they can not do it all. Most teachers already do a lot for their schools outside of the classroom, so being made to do more can be taxing and ineffective. |

I've worked for a very demanding supervisor, and it is not fun. One thing I had to learn is how to balance personal life and professional life. As teachers, we are constantly going and having to ensure we are on top of our A games. I do feel administrators are beginning to hold evaluations above their staffs head and it's becoming a tool of correction instead of a tool of reflection and growth. Moral of the story is keep fighting the good fight and all will be well in due time. I feel you'll be a better teacher as a result of the pressure. |
