How to Prepare for a Substitute
1.Write or type out the day's schedule, including begin and end times.
2.Under each time frame, explain in detail what needs to be done by the substitute teacher.
3.Mention any supervision duties that you might have that day.
4.Include details about your behavior management system, especially positive and negative consequences.
5.Write a list of both trustworthy and mischievous students.
6.Place nametags on the desk, if at all possible, and/ or leave a seating chart.
7.Mention any parent helpers that are scheduled to volunteer and what the helpers should accomplish.
8.Tell where to find any supplies needed throughout the day.
9.Describe any modifications you have made for students with special needs.
10.Make all necessary copies and label what they are.
11.Place sticky notes on the pages of any books to be used that day.
12.Put all necessary teacher's editions of textbooks and other resources in a sequential stack according to the day's schedule.
13.Leave the answer keys to all assignments so that the substitute can grade any work collected.
14.You may want to leave your copy machine code in case of emergencies.
15.When it comes to writing sub plans, the more detail, the better.
16.Relax! Chances are, everything will be just fine until you get back.

My question is: How do you make sure that what you leave is what is going to be happening in your classroom. Sometimes you do not always get substitutes that are really to work hard to make sure students are doing what they are suppose to do.

Substitutes work harder than you think! Coming into a classroom knowing nothing about the kids or what they are working on can be quite intimidating. Something all the work doesn't get done that day, but that's why teachers leave wiggle room for lessons that may last longer than one day!

Your system for preparing for a substitute is very helpful! It seems that the best thing a teacher can do to prepare for a substitute is have all the information they may need readily available. I know that as a substitute teacher I would feel tons more confident going into a classroom where I had specific instructions on what to do with the class, and how to handle the behavior of the class.

Thanks for the advice, I really could have used this my first day of subbing. I went into it with no training or anything on my first day. Great tips though!

I really enjoyed reading your post. As a current member of the substituting system, I have seen lots of the same techniques used. I would recommend that in addition to the above listed, the teacher either leave her email, the phone list of teachers in the school, and a teacher pal to communicate with. This few extra additions would make the substitute more comfortable coming into the classroom.

This tip is very helpful as leaving your classroom with another teacher can be difficult. The question I have is: What if the teacher will be gone for a longer period of time?

I want to mention that there was no mention of the school map or emergency layout plans or routes for evacuation. I would hope as a teacher preparing for another teacher you leave all the keys and important materials they would need in case of an emergency. I would hope you would prepare them for any type of situation. Because after all, they are looking after your class.

What would your advice be for the substitute coming in? I am going to have my first substitute job next week and would love a little insight.

This is such a great list. Very organized and thought out. There was a previous question that a member asked about subs not following your instructions. Honestly, you can not control what will happen in the classroom on that day. The sub has to make sure they are comfortable and the students adapt to them well. So, leaving a road map or guide for them helps. Subs deal with alot when the teacher is out. Students don't act the same way they do with the teacher. Hopefully, yoiu get better results.
