Know how I learned during my schooling group work for me was always more boring and frustrating then anything else and in many cases i would have happily worked by myself had I been given the option. As I am going to be teaching I was wanting to how to make group work feel good to be a part of for things like social learning but also offer the chance to those who want to work along or if this is even possible.

While some students do prefer to work individually, it is important for them to learn how to work well with others. You could try assigning each group member a role. This can help eliminate some of the frustration of students not doing their part so that the teacher knows which student did not participate and can grade accordingly.

I think this solution can benefit students in many ways. When putting them in an uncomfortable or different scenario can open up new ends over thing, which is what we as teachers definitely want!

If the group work is essential to the outcome of the assignment then I would make it in parts where each student is responsible for their own section. Students can collaborate together, but then get to do their own parts for a grade. If the group work is not essential to the outcome then I think students should be allowed to choose if they want to work in a group or separately. I think the hardest part of group work is that not everyone participates and one or two feel that they did everything while others did nothing. A rubric would help curb problems as well because it would show the expectations of the group work. Teachers should also go around and make sure everyone is involved and doing their share of work, too.

I like this suggestion and would do this if I were in the same situation.

While I completely relate to this, it is essential that students work together in school, as it will be needed in life. In an effort to avoid frustration of difficulty getting groups together, offer time in class for the students to work on their projects. Additionally, make it clear to the students they will have an opportunity to voice their opinions after the assignment, so those who aren't doing their part will be known.

Inquiry circles is a great strategy that allows students both to work independently on their own section of the project and in a group setting when presenting.

Sometimes, students need to learn how to function in a group environment. I might teach them about social cue and, how to work with others. Then, I would explain the rules of group activities, assign jobs, and have student assess their group mates.

Assign a specific task(s) for each group member and look at the strength and weakness of the student. See where the student may flourish. Maybe the student is the leader or in charge of art work ect... This allows the student to have interaction with a measured outcome.

I think it's important to offer a variety of both type of work because they both have their advantages. Group work can be great for building those social skills while individual work can be great for metacognitive skills.

I think it is best to use a variety of group work and individual work varying times throughout the year.

Most students now a days enjoy working in groups. Not many would rather branch off and complete their own work, however it happens. Explain the benefits of group work, they can truly learn from one another and even broaden the way the think.
