I've tried reading aloud to the students, having them read in pairs, having students volunteer to read, but I still have students that will not read regardless of the strategy. Any suggestions of strategies that work for students who won't read by themselves, don't pay attention when others read, and goof off in groups? Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!) You may need to work closely with those students to find a particular book that truly engages them. My son doesn't love to read, but his teacher has turned him on to several books that are a part of a series. Once he reads the first one and loves it, he is much more motivated to read the rest. Using book trailers, which are available on YouTube, are a great way to introduce new texts to students. It is so much easier to motivate students when they are interested in the book. It might be hard to find, but once one good book they like is found, having them read it is so much easier.
